Pacific Coast Highway August 2007
If you have not had the opportunity to drive the section of the Pacific Coast Highway between Monterey and Cambria / San Luis Obispo then please add it to your list of "must do drives" (if you already have you know what I mean). There is a 75 mile stretch of winding cliff roads overlooking the Pacific with almost no building at all on the entire route. The coast is very hilly and mostly almost a desert (like most of California). Rainfall average for the 5 months from May to September is less than one inch total. There is however fog that comes off the cold waters and as you can see in the photos it creates some interesting effects. While driving we went from hot desert temperatures to cool temperatures in the fog in a matter of seconds (very noticeable in a convertible).
Here are some photos taken mostly at the many scenic lookout spots along the road. The pictures of course don't give the full perspective and everything is bigger and more magnificent than it looks in the photos. Robert, Rickey and I rented a red Mustang convertible and did the drive 2x - once going north then several days later did the return. Heading south, the car is on the outside lane along the cliffs. When you go allow at least 1/2 a day to this 75 mile section and try to rent a convertible. The Mustang convertible was by far the most commonly seen car on the road.
regards,
Bob
